NOTES: Human names were requested and since Denmark and Norway don't have official human names I went with unofficial fan names. Denmark is referred to as Mathias and Norway is referred to as Nils. Hope you enjoy!
SUMMARY: Norway wanted to stay home, Denmark wanted to go shopping, and they both ended up learning something new; Norway about himself and Denmark...about Pocky.

Sundae

Today was not going as he planned.

Nils put a hand to his forehead and sighed deeply, fingers rubbing across the creases of his furrowed brow. Despite the beautiful sight of the coastline that was spread out before him from where he sat on the patio, Nils was annoyed even as the sound of churning waves lulled against his ears. He had a book resting inbetween his palms, the page carefully marked with a finger, but his attention was not on the words that he had been reading moments ago but instead on the man standing right in front of him and obscuring his vision. Mathias stood before him, hands on his hips, bright smile curling the corners of his lips and blue eyes sparkling in the Sunday afternoon light.

Despite the grin that was aimed at him, Nils couldn’t help but be annoying at the sudden interruption by the outspoken Dane when he had come bursting onto the patio only moments ago.

“Let’s go shopping Nils!” Mathias exclaimed, a wide toothy-grin spreading across pink lips. He was already dressed in jeans and a jacket, blonde hair tousled about in its usual haphazard manner, and Nils’s favorite coat slung across his arm in waiting.

“No,” Nils said, closing the book with a resounding thump and laying it across his lap after marking his page. “Leave me alone.” Even as he said those words Nils knew it wouldn’t be easy to persuade the Dane to leave; once Mathias got it into his mind to do something he always did it until he got the results he wanted.

“Oi, come on, it’ll be fun.” Mathias leaned over the chair where he was sitting, effectively obscuring any traces left of the beautiful watery scene that he had been enjoying. He could still hear the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocky walls below like bellows that drifted through the air and up toward the home situated at the cliff’s edge.

“No—“ He began again, but was unable to continue when his hand was grabbed by Mathias and he was pulled out of his chair, book carelessly tumbling to the ground. “What are you doing?” he managed to grumble out as he came to his feet, nearly tripping and falling over on the Dane in the process. He yanked his arm away and straightened out his clothing as he reached for his book, the page he had been reading now completely lost.

“I said yes,” Mathias repeated.

And that was how Nils had found himself walking down the shopping district with Mathias. Said individual was leading the way and stopping every few feet it seemed to ogle at something on the other side of a glass window, and Nils could do nothing but follow behind him like a person walking their dog down the street, unable to hurry him but also unable to leave him alone.

The streets were busy and crowded on the weekend afternoon, filled with the chatter and shuffling of bodies that came in and out of the busy shopping district that was crammed with an assortment of shops of all varieties. On any other day Nils thought he would have enjoyed the sight; the mixture of people, the cool breeze of the fall season, the lovely feel of the sun shining down from above. But not today, not right now when he would much rather be lounging on the patio of his house, reading the book that he had waited all week to buy and then open. But then Mathias had come, completely ruining his plans of solitude, unwilling to take no for an answer.

Nils sighed, arms crossed over his chest, and realized that this was probably the first time he had ever gone shopping with Mathias. It was a funny realization that came quite suddenly into his mind as he watched the way that Mathias’s board shoulders moved as he walked ahead of him. After all the years that they had known each other, after all the things they had experienced together, Nils could not remember a time when they had earnestly gone shopping together like this, with nothing to do but browse the windows and see what they wanted.

Already the Dane had picked up several things and the brightly colored bags were bobbing against his side as they walked together down the street. Nils had nothing, refusing to buy the multitude of things that Mathias had suggested from antique clocks to stylish scarves. Nils didn’t even want to be here and shopping was the furthest thing from his mind.

“Nils,” Mathias began as he interrupted the silence that had fallen between them. He waited until Nils moved closer, no longer trailing behind him but instead standing at his side along the crowded sidewalk.

“What?”

“Well…um…thanks for coming with me. I know you didn’t really want to…” Mathias’s voice trailed off and when Nils looked over to regard the taller man, he saw that Mathias wasn’t really looking at him, he was staring out in front of them, at the path beyond the streets lined with people. But Nils could still make out the corner of his sterling blue eyes, and the depths of thought that so rarely seemed to grace the carefree character. It was strange, Nils thought, the way in which this unfamiliar sensation crept through the depths of his body and for once was not coated in criticism and annoyance. Something that he saw in just the slightest corner of Mathias’s eyes stopped him from his usual berating and made him wonder what thoughts were churning in the Dane’s mind, muddled between the pillars of imagination and reason.

Under any other circumstance Nils knew he would have snapped back with a reply, but he found words failing him. He wasn’t sure why; whether it was just the nippy frost air, the way that Mathias seemed to genuinely mean what he was saying, or perhaps even that look in his eyes, but Nils couldn’t make himself say anything at all for the longest time.

After a long pause, finally, he said. “It’s fine.”

“Huh? Really?” Now Mathias did turn to look at him, and his smile was softer than normal, more touching, more real.

Nils just nodded his head, once, sharply. “That’s what I said. I’m not repeating myself.”

“Oi, okay, okay…” Mathias’s laugh filled the air. “Let’s just keeping shopping and have a good time. It’s good to get out of the house every once in a while.”

Almost immediately they were walking down the street again and Mathias found a store that caught his attention and went inside. Nils followed behind, grateful to be relieved from the noise and clamor of the sidewalks for a brief moment. Inside he found that they had entered an bakery of some kind, walls lined with boxes in a bright array of colors. When Nils stepped closer he saw the multitude of languages and realized it was an import store for cooking international cuisines and other such items.

“What’s this?” Nils heard Mathias say from across the room.

He walked over to where Mathias was standing and examined the red box the other had been looking at, picking up the item in his hand and turning it over. “It’s some sort of cracker.” Violet eyes narrowed as he read the label. “Its imported from Japan.”

“Japan! Oh wait, isn’t this the stuff that Kiku is always going on about? That name looks familiar…”

“Pocky,” Nils said aloud. “I remember him mentioning something—“

“—let’s get it!”

Nils sighed. “You don’t even know if you’ll like it.”

“Don’t care, I want it.” Mathias grabbed the box from Nils and headed toward the counter, already fishing out his wallet to pay. “Besides, if Kiku says its good then I bet it’ll be great.”

“Whatever,” Nils said, hands folding inside his jacket as he waited for Mathias to pay.

After Mathias had added another bag to his growing collection, they were back on the streets once again.

“I’m hungry, let’s get something to eat.” Mathias whined, slinging the bags over his shoulder.

“Can’t we go home yet?” Nils asked instead. Being with Mathias like this was exhausting; the Dane’s enthusiasm was hard to contain and trying follow said enthusiasm was like holding back the tides.

A small frown blemished Mathias’s otherwise carefree features, but the look was only there for a moment before the grin lit his blue eyes once more. He wrapped an arm around Nils’s shoulder, pulling the smaller man against his side despite the grumbling protests that emitted from his blonde haired companion. “Eat first, then we’ll see.” Mathias said as he began to lead him toward a building. A chime sounded above their heads as Mathias pushed open the door and dragged Nils inside.

“This isn’t even a restaurant,” Nils said as he finally pushed himself away from Mathias. “This is an ice cream shop.”

Blinking, Mathias looked around and saw that he had indeed chosen such a place and that the written-on-the-wall menu was lined with an array of sundaes, ice cream types, and more. “What’s wrong, Nils? Don’t like ice cream? You can’t seriously be so up tight that ice cream puts you in a bad mood.” Mathias dropped the shopping bags in front of a table and directed Nils to sit down. “I’ll get us something.” He said and was off again in a flash.

Nils frowned at the Dane’s back as he hurried away before leaning his elbows on the table. He was irked by Mathias’s statement and the other allusions he had made through out the day; that he was boring, he was spending too much time alone, that he didn’t know how to have fun anymore. Just because he didn’t like making a scene everywhere he went…

A sigh escaped between his lips as he slumped forward. He closed his eyes, not wanting to think about it and instead lose his mind in the oblivion of empty thoughts. He was tired and he was grumpy, but he didn’t want anymore comments from Mathias either.

He wasn’t sure how long he remained like that, but when he finally opened his eyes again Mathias was back and sitting at the table across from him, two sundaes resting on the table between them. They were both brightly colored and decorated with an assortment of nuts, caramel, chocolate, and whipped cream topping.

Mathias was watching him as he looked up and it was then that Nils noticed that he had taken the Pocky from its wrapping and a half-eaten piece of cracker rested inbetween his fingers.

“What are you doing?” Nils asked.

“Trying these things from Kiku’s place. Want to try one?” He asked, holding out the box in offering. “They’re really good.”

Nils shook his head. “No.”

Mathias frowned. “I got you a chocolate sundae.” he said, ignoring Nils’s blunt and rude behavior. “Hurry and eat up before it melts.”

Nils bit his lower lip, tempted to say something else but nothing came from his lips. Instead he reached out a hand for the spoon resting on the corner of the sundae and twirled it around the vanilla, chocolate, and whipped cream.

Mathias continued to watch him. “Listen, Nils, I know you don’t want to hear this but you’ve gotta lighten up sometime.” He said, flicking his hand around and the chocolate covered stick in the process.

“I won’t take advice from someone like you.” Nils said with a sigh, leaning the side of his face in one hand, and looking off into the distance.

Mathias was frowning, looking at him with dejected blue eyes. “But how’s life going to be exciting if you keep refusing to do stuff? You used to always hang out with me and Su-san…”

Nils snapped his head up at that. “Are you implying that I’ve grown old and boring?”

“Well you’re the one that won’t do anything exciting. You won’t even try one of these Pocky sticks.”

“That’s—“ Nils began, but suddenly stopped when he realized that maybe Mathias was right. When was the last time he had gone out and done anything adventurous? Had he fallen into a complacent life filled with endless days of criticizing others but avoiding advice given to him? He didn’t like that. It left a taste lingering on his lips like a foul odor. Even though he would never admit it out loud—never given Mathias the smug satisfaction of realizing that he was right—he couldn’t deny the fact to himself. Maybe he was just…

Nils reached across the table and swiped the piece of Pocky from right between Mathias’s fingers.

“Hey, I was eating that, get your—“

“Shut up,” Nils snapped. He looked at the stick thoughtfully and was about to bring it to his lips, when a thought struck him. Without another word he dipped the stick into the Dane’s chocolate sundae, stirring the contents like a spoon and then took the ice cream clad stick and put it to his mouth, chomping down loudly. His eyes opened wide at surprise at the swirling taste that reached the depth of his taste buds; the cool of the vanilla ice cream, the crunch of the cracker, the firm coating of chocolate. It was a delicious combination.

When he looked across the table, Mathias was staring at him with a look filled with a mixture of confusion and wonder. “What?” Nils said with a frown. “I like things cold.”

Suddenly the Dane laughed, the irony of the moment overwhelming. “I never said anything.” He reached over and hugged the Norwegian, despite the other’s grumbling protests. “I’m just glad to see you’ve still got a little adventure left in you.”

“Whatever,” Nils mumbled but still didn’t pull away. He didn’t want to admit it, but even Mathias had to be right eventually.

“You may not see it as much, but its one small step in the right direction.”

Nils finally pushed him away with a sigh. “Don’t try to analyze me, Mathias. You’ll break something in that simpleton head of yours.” Nils dipped another piece of Pocky into the ice cream and this time shoved it right into Mathias’s mouth. “Just shut up and eat.”

Mathias mumbled something between the cookie in this mouth, but Nils wasn’t listening, he was already reaching for his next piece.

THANK YOU! <3

YAY!! :D

It's super cute masanami, I thank you with a hundred flower petals that will fly through the sky and float around you! xD

I'm sorry about the human name thing, I realized after I double-checked my request (which wasn't until a few days ago ^__^;) that neither Denmark nor Norway had official human names, but you pulled it off!

I love how you made Denmark with a bit of a shy side to him, and Norway as his usual cold, snarky self. Mmmm... now I want a sundae. xD

Thanks again for this masanami! <3

That was so adorable and I was totally expecting Norway to just fling a spoonful of ice cream at Denmark. I never thought to try pocky in ice cream but it makes sense that it would be amazing, and now I might have to =D
